Boulder was incorporated as Boulder City in 1873, and the university opened its doors in 1877. Today Boulder is popular with outdoor enthusiasts as it is surrounded by more than 36,000 acres of recreational open space, conservation easements, and nature preserves. It is a top destination for rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking among other outdoor sports.
